The Olana Partnership
Director of Development

The Olana Partnership
For over 25 years, The Olana Partnership (TOP), an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has worked in a model public-private partnership with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP) to restore, conserve and interpret Frederic Church’s Olana, a National Historic Landmark and State Historic Site. Church was the most celebrated American artist of the mid-19th century, and Olana and its 250-acre designed landscape is his greatest masterpiece. Church’s prescient commitment to environmental conservation and viewshed protection and his cosmopolitan worldview extend Olana’s interests beyond the fields of American art and historic preservation and its significance far beyond the Hudson Valley. Moreover, Olana and the City of Hudson are on the brink of a new era of growth and engagement with the broader world.
TOP and NYSOPRHP are embarked on a major capital campaign to restore and interpret the remaining elements of the house and landscape. The Director of Development will be a key, senior member of TOP’s leadership team responsible for developing and directing the campaign in coordination with TOP’s President and Board, as well as all other development activities.
Position Description
The Olana Partnership seeks an experienced, highly motivated professional to serve as Director of Development. The position is responsible for the planning and implementation of long- and short-range fundraising objectives to be met through individual and corporate giving, grant writing, annual fund and special appeals, and membership and earned income. The Director of Development sets annual fundraising goals and holds responsibility for meeting them. This position reports to the President and serves as a member of The Olana Partnership’s management team. FLSA Status: Exempt – Executive
• Establish, manage and regularly report on fundraising goals and timelines.
• Take primary responsibility for executing fundraising strategy, including donor cultivation and stewardship; funding proposals; monitoring funding report compliance; managing online and event-based fundraising; and managing fundraising budget and resources.
• Provide leadership and direction to President, Board, staff and volunteers to engage current and future donors.
• Supervise special events, including major annual gala and other events throughout the year, both in New York City and at Olana. The supervision of event activity may involve heavy lifting, although it will mainly be the oversight thereof.
• Establish and manage systems and processes for prospect research, donor cultivation and information tracking.
• Research, identify and manage grant relationships with foundation, corporation and government sources.
• Direct all aspects of capital campaign and annual giving, including prospecting, cultivation, stewardship and tracking of individual supporters.
• Supervise aspects of membership program including cultivation, stewardship and tracking of members.
• Ensure fundraising activity supports curatorial and educational program development and broader organizational goals.
• Support President and other senior staff members in development of short- and long-term communications and outreach goals.
• Manage all development activities, including supervising staff and managing relationships with consultants and volunteers.
• Perform other duties as required as part of management team.
The ideal candidate will combine substantial development and fundraising experience with a diplomatic yet entrepreneurial approach to meeting objectives. Candidates may come from a variety of non-profit or institutional backgrounds, including cultural, environmental, community development, educational and healthcare/social service organizations. However, they must have a strong interest in the mission of The Olana Partnership to inspire the public by preserving and interpreting Frederic Church’s Olana.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study; 7 to 10 years of experience in development and fundraising with most recent experience at a leadership level.
• A proven track-record in developing and implementing successful capital campaigns.
• Superior writing and editing skills as well as strong problem solving and listening skills.
• Experience with donor databases such as Raiser’s Edge, Abila, Tessitura, Constant Contact or other donor database management systems required.
• Experience in working cooperatively with a Board of Directors.
• Experience in supervising multiple staff members and the ability to model effective results-oriented decision making and inspire staff through success.
• Ability to effectively coordinate and track multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize, work well under pressure with a high degree of accuracy, and meet stringent and overlapping deadlines.
• Ability to maintain confidential information, both personal and professional, with discretion and tact.
• Ability to be an outstanding ambassador for TOP and Olana, engaging all constituencies with a professional, sophisticated demeanor.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed.
• Knowledge of fundraising laws and regulations and fundraising best practices.
• Knowledge of and/or enthusiasm for American art, history, landscape history and environmental conservation a plus.
Please submit resume and a cover letter, including salary requirements, to: admin@olana.org with Development Search in the subject line, or mail to: Development Search, The Olana Partnership, P.O. Box 199, Hudson, NY 12534. The Olana Partnership is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
